The Secrets to Floor Plan Perfection

    May 29, 2020

There are a lot of important lessons grown-ups can learn from children’s fairy tales. For example, when Goldilocks invaded the bear family, her first concern was to find a comfortable place to sit, a perfect place to rest, and a spot where she could enjoy her meal.

However, it this quest she faces several obstacles, a bed that was way too big for her, a cold meal, and a weak chair that fell to pieces. After some trial and error, she finally found solutions to her problems.

It is really important to draft your home’s floor plan or even review the existing one to make it more comfortable for your needs. But how would you know that the plan you have made will suit the needs of your family? How would you plan the size and shape?

First of all, you must consider the number of people who will be living in the house. If you are recently married, then most probably the number of people will be two. If you have kids, the residents could be 4 to 6. However, if you are planning to make your home a vacation destination for friends and family, you may need to accommodate 10 to 15 people or even more.

Listed below is some expert advice about size and amenities that can help you make a perfect floor plan.

    Room for Two

Whether it’s your first home or your home forever, try these tips:

    • If you are planning to have a room for two, you must follow a simple floor plan. Typically, it should be a single story with an open loft. It will give you all the primary living space at one level, including the bedrooms.
    • A doorway that is about 36 inches should lead into the bedroom and bathrooms to give a grand and spacious look. It also allows for accessibility and mobility.
    • When planning a smaller home, look at space that is blank and figure out how you can convert it into storage space.

    A family of four

    • In a four to six-person home, you’ll need four bedrooms or three, plus a loft. Try to build up than to build-out. Finishing the basement or adding a loft for additional sleeping space is perfect. You may even want to incorporate a second kitchen in the basement.
    • Create a separation between bedrooms so residents feel they’ve got the privacy they need.

    To accommodate 10 or more

    • This is mostly a multifamily situation. In such a case, it is better to give each family a separate entrance door.
    • Make sure you have a really good kitchen with extra-large appliances to accommodate feeding a crowd.
    • Make sure you plan enough bathrooms.
